My Background

I'm Sam Gotthelf, a mechanical engineer, USAC-certified route setter, and competitive climber with over a decade of experience in the sport. I led the development of the University of Pittsburgh's climbing wall, one of the largest modern collegiate climbing wall in the country, managing everything from vendor coordination and hold procurement to routesetting infrastructure and staff training documentation.

My work sits at the intersection of engineering, climbing, and operations, and I bring all three to every project.

With personalized strategies, I help clients achieve sustainable growth and maximize their potential.

Climbing Wall Design Consulting

I work alongside architects, wall manufacturers, and stakeholders to design climbing facilities that are functional, inspiring, and built to last. Whether you're planning a new university rec center wall or renovating an existing facility, I advise on wall angles, feature placement, traffic flow, safety clearances, and layout optimization, ensuring the finished product serves beginners, competitive teams, and recreational users alike.

Climbing Hold Selection & Procurement

With deep knowledge of hold brands, shapes, and styles, I curate hold sets that balance training value, fun, and long-term variety. I tailor recommendations to your budget, facility size, and community goals, and handle communication with suppliers to simplify the process.

I built a free hold inventory tracker template that I use on real projects. It covers size distribution, brand mix, hardware, budget tracking, and replacement stock. Get it here.

Operations & SOP Development

A great wall needs great operations behind it. I write customized standard operating procedures covering routesetting schedules, safety inspections, staff training protocols, belay certification workflows, and risk management documentation. These SOPs give your team a clear playbook from day one — reducing liability, improving consistency, and making it easier to onboard new staff.

Custom Projects & Advisory

Every wall and community is unique. I take on custom projects—from helping with grand opening events to advising on competition logistics or long-term strategy—to ensure your facility reaches its full potential.

A Student Wellness Testimonial: Sam Gotthelf

"Given the vertical nature of Oakland topography, one could easily assume that only a select few of Pitt’s halest and hardiest students would clamor to climb a towering, obstacle-laden wall on the sixth floor of a glass-encased building straddling upper and lower campus.

Numbers from the past few days, however, render that assumption moot."

Excitement abounds during opening week for Recreation and Wellness Center

"Sam Gotthelf, a sophomore in mechanical engineering, is a member of the Club Climbing Team at Pitt, which ranked No. 3 nationally. He is quoted in the article discussing the sport and the team's goals, and also attended nationals."
